  • The recent surge in scholarly activity regarding the historical Jesus has once again raised difficult questions regarding the relationship of history to faith, as well as the tenability of traditional Christian teachings regarding Jesus. The paper, after tracing the development of the 'quest' from its inception during the scientific revolution to our own day, and examining claims for its significance (or lack thereof) for the Christian faith, recommends that the pastor apply the historical information in a highly-calibrated fashion. Contrary to the media hype touting the revolutionary impact of the recent scholarship, traditional understandings of Jesus are shown to be bolstered by a judicious encounter with the research.
