  • The purpose of this quasi-empirical study is to discover if Jesuit priests in rural, cross-cultural ministry with Native Americans experience more stress and burnout than Jesuit priests working in urban areas with people who are primarily of the same culture. The sample is 89 Jesuit priests who complete a demographic data sheet, Maslach Burnout Inventory, and a Sources of Stress in Ministry Questionnaire. Forty-three are from the rural group (experimental) and 46 are from the urban group (control). The study tests three major research hypotheses by using the two tailed t-test for independent samples. It finds that rural Jesuits are more emotionally exhausted and experience a greater sense of depersonalization than urban Jesuits. There is little difference between the groups on personal accomplishment, physical symptoms, and days of illness. Rural Jesuits score higher on the critical items cluster of the Sources of Stress Indicator. The pressure of working with people of another culture, and the lack of social and cultural resources are especially significant items.
