  • Recognizing the complexity of 21st-century context, this study asks how the difficult claims of the Gospel might be heard and embraced by a complacent postmodern audience. Drawing on the history of early Salvation Army preaching into critical conversation with the felt realities of postmodernity, this thesis argues for a recovery of biblical preaching that seeks to name what is at stake for the listener. Identifying the transformational homiletic that defined the preaching of William and Catherine Booth, foundation is laid for assimilation and re-contextualization of confrontational preaching, inviting contemporary preachers to recognize the significance of the homiletical moment before them.
