This fiction-poetry project explores themes of toxic theology, interpretation of scripture, and the revelation of God in nature to spotlight religious trauma and to imagine a potential path of reconciliation for people who abandon Christian faith because of church harm. The main character has been both enriched and traumatized by the church. She narrates her spiritual journey in collaboration with a limited “cloud of witnesses.” Odes to trees separate the varying narrative voices. The creative work is accompanied by a dialogical essay discussing theologies that informed the author’s ideas and imagination.
