  • Meaningful preaching can use story, Biblical or non-Biblical, and remain honest to the way in which the Bible is held by the preacher, while at the same time honoring variously held views of the Bible among listeners. Interviews, sermon analysis and questionnaires were used in seven different congregations at eight preaching events to assess listener response. For the five preachers in this study, those whose views of the Bible more closely matched their listeners' views used less story, while those whose views vary more from their listeners' views used more story. Of respondents, 82% heard the transformative message of the sermons and were able to articulate how their thoughts and actions would be affected in positive ways.
