- The purpose of this study was to discover factors that contributed to the development of active church membership in The First United Methodist Church of Collinsville, Illinois. This qualitative case study of thirty-three participants revealed that the primary reason for their active membership was rooted in relationships and participation in small groups including lay ministries. A second reason was their commitment to lay ministry. The third reason emerged from religious consumerism and opportunities for faith development. The participants saw God at work in their church through the people of the congregation, and the denomination itself was of nominal importance.
