  • This paper follows my journey creating a spiritual life center in a poor inner city church in the South Green section of Hartford, Connecticut. When I first arrived, the church was closed and set to be demolished. By inspiring the remaining congregation, and empowering them using the principles espoused by the Second Vatican Council of reversing the hierarchy of the clergy and by following Jackson W. Carroll's model of how to exercise authority, they performed outreach in the surrounding community, extending an invitation to non-affiliated Catholics to attend Saint Peter's, and by listening to the spiritual needs of the people. The result was the expansion of the church to the point that it was possible to reopen the church building. By empowering the people of Saint Peter's, the church building and parish were saved, and ultimately a spiritual life center was created.
