  • Since Vatican II, many Roman Catholic theologians, especially Theodore Mackin, have documented a paradigm shift in the understanding of the sacrament of marriage. The shift has enhanced the ends of marriage to acknowledge and include the importance of partnership and community. This project explains a contemporary understanding of the sacrament of marriage. Additionally, it presents the John Gottman research-based marital therapy process. It demonstrates the strong correlations between a Roman Catholic theology of marriage and Gottman's Sound Marital House theory. These correlations make a strong argument for the use of the Gottman theory in a Roman catholic setting.
