  • This dissertation explores Paul Tillich's understanding of expressive art as a means for doing theology. It looks at theologians and artists influenced by Paul Tillich. It provides a case study of Matisse, Coburn and Rothko's chapel paintings. The second part of the dissertation project is a creative project that includes the painting of seven major works that were hung in a Protestant worship space. Congregational members were invited to respond to the work and their conversation recorded to show the ways in which they 'did theology.'.
