  • This project explores the complex issue of clergy who leave the pastorate for secular employment through interviews with nine Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod pastors who have made that transition. Five themes emerge: consistent presence of conflict, perceived lack of spiritual and personal care, absence of relationship building, high levels of family stress, and continuing personal faith. The project examines these themes in relation to vocation, call, and ordination, in order to offer suggestions for pastors, congregations, and the Missouri Synod.
