  • This study explored the ways in which the role of minister as pastoral counselor is influenced by other roles, namely, those of teacher, preacher, administrator, supervisor of lay activities and social peer. The focus was on long-term counseling, defined as five or more interviews in weekly sessions. Research included structured interviews with twenty-five parish clergy with specialized training in counseling, the collection and analysis of questionnaires distributed through the above clergy to counselees, and library study of relevant materials. The primary finding was that counseling with one's own parishioners presents difficulties which counseling with non-members does not, the main difficulty being that of role conflict.
