  • 'I can't say that!' is the response of many white pastors when considering preaching about anti-racism in a congregation whose members are European-American. Based on a series of sermons that speak to the issues of racism, responses by congregational members and preachers are analyzed to determine if the issue can be addressed without undue conflict. The person of the preacher and her or his ability to 'own' his/her own inherited racism allows the issue to be addressed frankly and without anyone running screaming from the church.
