Abstrait

The author researched the acoustical makeup of worship spaces that affect the spoken word and music. In such spaces, the changing qualities of word and music have an impact on the experience of worship. The author's methodology was phenomenological utilizing individual interviews as the research technique. The research centered on the participants' memory, a theme of aesthetics and the creative imagination to articulate their experiences. A sense of awe, wonder and mystery emerged as the prerogative of reverberation characteristics. The study concludes that clergy, musicians and others should use existing reverberation more creatively and to factor reverberation characteristics into the design of new worship spaces.
