  • The purpose of this thesis was to recover the historical practice of the Lord's Table as a weekly sacrament of joy. The context for the thesis project was the Stanwood Free Methodist Church which is located forty-give minutes north of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Stanwood is a small village of aobut 200 people. Most of the people of the church live in the country. The design of the project was a case study using an action research model. This model was used to effect a change in the given congregation's understanding, experience, and practice of the communal meal. The thesis was evaluated along accepted lines of social research using a triangulation of methods including questionnaires, a focus group, and field notes. This evaluation demonstrated that four out of five goals were achieved, and that a substantial change in attitude may have been achieved with the remaining goal.
