  • This thesis explores Christian theology of death, popular perceptions of death in American culture, and functions of a Christian funeral. Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho beliefs and customs concerning death and burial are studied through interviews with Cheyenne and Arapaho religious leaders and relevant written materials. Two sample Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho funerals described in the paper contain Christian and traditional Cheyenne and Arapaho religious elements. These funeral services are critiqued by practitioners of Christianity and traditional Cheyenne and Arapaho religions. Ongoing changes in Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho culture and their impact on funeral customs are noted.
