Abstracto

The goal of this project/thesis was to involve the deacons of a given local church where the author served as pastor to reach out to and reclaim inactive church members. Elements of the project included the use of a training program developed by the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, a series of sermons by the pastor on deacons and lay ministry, and a more in-depth study on these subjects. Methods of study included the project activities, the evaluation of these activities, and consultation of numerous bibliographical resources. The thesis includes biblical, historical, and theological studies on deacon ministry. As a result of this study, deacons were held in higher esteem by the congregation because of their increased visibility and involvement. Some inactive members did return to the church. The self-image and emotional atmosphere of the church became much more positive.
