  • Twenty-first century shepherds
Abstrait
  • The model for Presbyterian elder leadership shifted dramatically in the early 20th century from first being shepherds of people evolving to become custodians of the institution-- a shift out of step with nearly 4000 years of practice. The author researched and recounts the Biblical and historical record of elder practice, including 19th and 20th century Session minutes, elder manuals, and historical records demonstrating this shift. The author argues that the shift to the 'institutional' model away from the 'personal' model has been devastating for the PC(USA), outlines a strategy for congregations to shift back to the personal model, and argues that the personal model is not only proper but necessary and practical for today.
