  • Old churches discover new life not by reconstituting the past but through responding creatively to the future. Such change in vision and structure requires new wineskins. A cathedral model of base communities builds on existing expressions of the church's historical journey to suggest an ecclesial model suitable for urban Old First congregations. A theological and ecclesiological base is developed for the church as a mediating community between society and new creation, using both cathedral and cell concepts to develop institutional structure. A congregation renewal project and a process of property development are used to evaluate ways in which the model facilitated renewal and mission in Calvary Baptist Church, Washington, DC.
