- This project starts with the premise that the role of rabbi has changed significantly from its classical conception, that of the 'scholar-saint.' Modern rabbis accept those changes, and attempt to use these new roles to establish their authority in the synagogue and community. Based on extensive interviews with Jewish Theological Seminary-trained congregational rabbis in northern California, the nature of that authority is studied. The project concludes that rabbis utilize an 'authority of process.' It suggests dynamic, midrashic models of this interactive authority.
