  • This study was conducted to investigate the impact of religion on the attitudes of drug users and their families in the black community. The hypothesis is that religion is still significant in the black drug sub-culture, whether they attend church or not. A survey was conducted among 15 drug users in the Highland Park vicinity of Richmond, Virginia. This survey form consisted of values that people hold and are passed on in families through the generations; family structures and interaction patterns; sources of pereceived stress; and demographic data. The data revealed that the overwhelming majority of the respondents were either fairly or very religious; none of the respondents indicated they were not religious at all. Though the overwhelming majority were religious, a significant majority of the respondents do not attend religious services at all. Many of the life values that are important to non-drug-using cultures are important to the black drug sub-culture. The black drug sub-culture expects things to get better for them in the future and in general are God-conscious.
