  • American Methodism does not find its central act of worship in the Lord's Supper. It departed from its Wesleyan and classical origins during its New World development. Research for this study is based on a questionnaire and a review of the historical development of American Methodism. Data is drawn from one hundred pastors in the South Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. The results of the study indicate a disparity between Methodist practice and piety with regard to the Eucharist. This disparity contributes to the recent ills of the denomination. Methodism's rediscovery of its classical piety is urgent. Some positive signs of movement toward that goal are present.
