This project investigates the conflict over the Bible's inspiration within the Advent Christian Church from the 1950s through the early 1960s, setting the debate within the Fundamentalist-Modernist controversies and exploring its influence on the two colleges that trained Advent Christian clergy--Berkshire Christian College (Lenox, Mass) and Aurora University (Ill). The conflict represents a clash between two principles that mark restorationist-oriented denominations and movements: an understanding of the Bible's inspiration that minimizes the value of church tradition and an emphasis on individual autonomy in matters of faith.
