  • This project explores the theological foundations and practical implications of Africanization in the United Methodist Church in Liberia. In informal discussions and workshops church members grapple with use of drums, sasa, and African robes by choirs and clergy; incorporation of traditional values of initiation from Sande and Poro societies in the sacrament of baptism; and use of cassava bread and palm wine as elements of the Lord's supper. They conclude that Africanization will provide greater opportunity for growth and development of the church, but use of cassava bread and palm wine will require further study.
