  • Orthodox Christian women minister amidst tensions between two mysteries of theological anthropology: one shared nature as humankind, yet distinctiveness as gender female. The author exhorts women to embrace their baptismal commitment to Christ's Church without compromising their differences and needs, at the same time refusing to be overlooked or discounted. At the 2004 conference co-sponsored by Women's Orthodox Ministries and Education Network, three questionnaires showed that over 75% of American women believe restoring the Order of Deaconess is important. The author documents Orthodox women's modern history and top concerns; summarizes Orthodox arguments regarding women; and offers guidelines for women's ministries.
