  • The project's thesis is that laywomen need to be empowered for increased participation and leadership in church and society. The practicum's hypothesis is that when laywomen are introduced to their history through stories of significant laywomen and are provided occasions for personal reflection in the light of these stories, the experience will be empowering. Women's contemporary situation is described and history is surveyed to substantiate the need for empowerment. The significance of stories is examined from both theological and feminist points of view. The project includes a detailed description of the practicum which was repeated in three diverse congregations and which demonstrated that there is merit to the hypothesis.
