  • This paper reflects on the relationship between worship and evangelism from an African American perspective. Evangelism is a part of mission; worship an action of God's people. Evangelism is a personal and communal activity of a worshipping community. The paper recounts worship as it was honed in the Black religious American experience. African American Lutheran struggles with Eurocentric worship are explored. Five worship models used in African American Lutheran circles are proposed. One is demonstrated in the creation of a setting of the Lutheran Book of Worship Holy Communion rite (1978) that was field-tested in two worshipping contexts.
