  • The dissertation is an attempt to determine the implications of secular management theory for pastors and staffs of larger congregations. Nine United Methodist congregations ranging from 500 to 999 members were studied. The author concluded the following: 1) congregations numbering 500 to 999 members are not just small congregations grown larger, but require a different leadership style, particularly on the part of the pastor; 2) the relational pastor-director leadership style generally produces more effective ministry on the part of pastor and staff; and 3) the skilled pastor-director tailors his or her leadership style to meet the group's needs and accomplish the desired results.
