  • Preaching attempts to relate the 'strange world of the Bible' across distance of time and culture with experiences of our lives. Narrative techniques meet this challenge exceptionally well when responsive to emotions entwined with 'ultimate concerns' that transcend time and place. Psycho-social theories aid comprehension of those emotions and guide our response to inspire faithfulness. Work of Paul Ricoeur, other theologians, and the theories of Erik Erikson and Abraham Maslow ground this thesis. Congregational interviews and Parish Project Group conversations serve as primary tools to discern relevant concerns. Various narrative techniques patterned by life concerns, insights of psycho-social development and stories of life experiences knit an effective homiletic 'means of grace.'
