  • The purpose of this study was to understand the attitudes and practices of preachers from a theologically Reformed background toward the use of writing in the preparation and delivery of sermons. The study used a narrative questionnaire of nearly one hundred Reformed pastors throughout the United States and semi-structured interviews with four additional pastors preaching from within a Reformed theological understanding. The study revealed a heavy reliance on writing in both the preparation and delivery of sermons. It found that both pastors and congregants deeply care about sermon delivery. Multiple approaches to this practice were uncovered, influenced by the preacher's habit, personality, theological beliefs, and training. A high percentage of pastors lacked training in sermon delivery. The study concluded that pastors in the Reformed tradition spend much more time thinking about sermon preparation than delivery, despite their frustration with their sermon delivery.
