- The primary concern of this study is the content of American worship services and the appropriate correlation with the present culture. The Church should search for the same position that Jesus embraced -- live in the tension of being in the world, but not of the world. What would a worship model, maintaining this tension, look like? This thesis begins by exploring the fundamental teachings that are forever necessary to Christian worship. The Church's worship must remain thoroughly biblical with Jesus being the center, no matter what cultural setting. This must form the content of worship. Postmodernism contains some values that are in direct conflict with Christianity, and the Church must never compromise on its beliefs. Other postmodern values, such as the desire for community and the search for spiritual meaning provide the Church a great opportunity to express authentic Christianity and influence many. The cultural values help shape the style and the relevance of worship. This thesis examines four worship services from churches that are attempting to incarnate Christianity in a postmoden setting.
