  • The project explores the nature of clergy authority, its sources, legitimation and dynamics, with special attention to clergy entering new parish settings. A study of the reigns of Saul, David and Solomon provides models for the exercise of authority among the people of God. Special emphasis is placed on the paradoxical notion of success: Solomon, the most 'successful' of the Israelite kings, proved unable to preserve the united monarchy for his successors. Reflection on this fact, together with reference to management literature and reports of a series of getting-acquainted meetings in a new parish setting, lead to the conclusion that precariousness, vulnerability and a sense of being an exile are essential components of effective and authentic parish ministry.
