  • Shusaku Endo, writing as a Japanese author from the Roman Catholic tradition, questioned throughout his literary career the relevance and appeal of the traditional European male image of Jesus. Using his highly acclaimed novel Silence, and his smaller work A Life of Jesus, I convened a small reading group that engaged these literary texts specifically to challenge their images of Jesus. By reading these literary works, which emphazise the humanity of Jesus from a non-academic Japanese understanding, the participants in this project reflected on how they came to understand Jesus and how Endo challenged their understandings.
