  • The problem in ministry which this project and report seek to address is that of developing a program of biblical and liturgical depth in a congregation which is culturally diverse, doctrinally varied, and highly mobile…In order to discover whether or not Bible study could be correlated with the lections for sunday worship in such a way that understanding of the texts would be heightened and the meaningfulness of worship enhanced, a group from Kobe Union Church was formed during Advent, 1977, to study the lections prior to each Sunday and to assist the Pastor in the planning of each Sunday’s service. Appropriate control groups using alternate procedures for preparation were also established, and testing instruments were developed…The hypothesis which the project was created to test, then, is whether understanding of the Biblical texts and appreciation of Sunday worship can be significantly increased by advance preparation, even if the activity is undertaken for only a short-term period.
