  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate how effective safeTALK is in equipping Airmen to intervene when a fellow military member is having thoughts of suicide. Suicide is a major problem confronting every branch of the military. This study focuses on Airmen in the enlisted rank of E-4 to E-5. These Airmen are entering the ranks of the non-commissioned officer corps. Each participant was presented with a survey immediately before and after the safeTALK class to measure its effectiveness in making them more alert to the possibility of suicide, their confidence to ask directly about suicide, and connect those at risk with a keep safe connection. Sixty days after the class, another survey was sent by e-mail to examine the participant's retention of lessons learned in safeTALK and their willingness and ability to implement the steps for a successful intervention. Those who identified themselves as having personally experienced suicide through the attempted suicide or death of a loved one were asked to sit down for an interview with the author. Lessons learned from those who agreed to be interviewed were used to examine how their personal experience affected their motivation to help a person at risk and gauge safeTALK's effectiveness. SafeTALK was found to be effective in preparing Airmen to intervene when a fellow military member was having suicidal thoughts.
