  • This project examines how sermon preparation methods relate to church attendance. One hundred-seventeen pastors from the Missouri East conference of the United Methodist Church responded to a 20-question sermon-preparation survey measuring how pastors establish priorities, study time, resources, prayer life, planning, and techniques. The project did not confirm a direct relationship between sermon-preparation practices and worship attendance, but the study found important differences among pastors in five areas: advance sermon planning, number of resource publications used, number of hours spent in preparation, strategies for protecting time, and frequency of last-minute sermon preparation.
