  • The purpose of this work is to identify, explore and prompt reflection on distinguishing characteristics of the Holy Spirit's work of congregational renewal. Primary attention is given to Luke's portrait of the earliest Christian community in Acts, a book of particular significance to Christians from the Disciples and other restorationist traditions. Foundational to this study is the principal theological truth that the Church is the Spirit-born, Spirit-dependent creation of God. Spiritual vitality, therefore, is not the consequence of human effort, but the result of the Spirit's initiative to which we can respond and with which we can cooperate. As we cooperate with the Spirit's renewing work, we can expect to see in increasing measure certain marks of spiritual vitality that were present in the earliest Christian community: genuine worship, authentic fellowship, mission-consciousness, commitment to shared ministry, and spiritual attentiveness.
