- Every pastor who is called upon to perform weddings has the unique opportunity to assist a couple with developing a foundation for a satisfying marital relationship which can begin in the pastor's practice of premarital counseling. This thesis/project is a descriptive study of the premarital counseling practices of a sample of 20 pastors in the Presbytery of Genesee Valley, New York, who were interviewed to ascertain their practices concerning inclusion of discussion of five areas of marital satisfaction which appear to be important for the content of premarital counseling: background information, communications, money, religion, and sexuality. There is a wide divergence in the premarital counseling practices of pastors. Some do an excellent job, but the majority of the sample appear to be struggling or frustrated in their practice of premarital counseling. This document encourages pastors to pursue further training in pastoral counseling with an emphasis on premarital counseling.
