  • Though called to unity, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is deeply split. Such division is contrary to biblical teaching and reflects the need for church leadership committed to unity and skilled in conflict resolution. In this study, members of the Northumberland Presbytery Council were engaged in Bible study on Paul's call to unity and then introduced to conflict resolution theory. Informed by surveys submitted by council members, the author explores how Northumberland Presbytery pursues unity in the midst of its diversity and conflict. The paper has a particular interest in demonstrating how conflict resolution theory offers a valuable, necessary and timely resource to the church.
