The cabinet of the Wisconsin Annual Conference sent a letter to their clergy stating: 'We, Bishop Lee and the cabinet, are committed to long term appointments.' This raises the question; what are the necessary disciplines United Methodist preachers must practice if they are to be effective and relevant in a long term appointment? Building on the research of the Alban Institute, professional experiences of pastor's in healthy long term appointments, and gaining crucial insights from the Benedictine vow of stability, the author of The Stable Pulpit describes how to thrive in the pulpit and parish in long term pastorates.
