  • The thesis of this study is the design and implementation of long term healing responses to United Methodist clergy stress and burnout. The author researched clergy stress in one District of the Virginia Annual Conference through an ethnographic study. The author presents Sabbath rest as the theological foundation for a response to clergy stress and burnout. The long term healing responses to stress and burnout presented are preventive care, a retreat based Sabbath rest mininstry, and clergy spiritual support groups. The study concludes with a prophetic call for the development of the Clergy Care Institute at Wesley Theological Seminary.
