- Introducing persons to a literary approach to reading Scripture holds several promises. It enables persons to read biblical narratives with a second naivete. Persons from different backgrounds are able to participate in a shared experience of the story. Seven persons from Cary-First United Methodist Church were introduced to a literary approach, using the Joseph story (Gen 37-50), over an eight-week period. The participants kept a journal in which they identified with a particular character. They developed the voice of the chosen character by filling in the gaps present in the story. Participants demonstrated a new skill in reading Scripture.
