Abstrakt

Given the common quandry many local congregations face regarding the place of young children in worship, it makes good sense to set aside time for a supplementary worship service for families with young children. Adults once distanced from the church have an open door to the church provided them as well as a new place for service and participation. Children of diverse ages are provided both a new forum for active participation and a time for worship. All those involved are given a new context in which to participate in the narrative message of the gospel which claims seekers and believers in ways which nurture faith and stimulate the enterprise of raising children with biblical faith. This event, called church school worship, meets contemporary social and religious needs especially prevalent among baby boomer parents. It can serve as a vital and creative tool within a comprehensive family ministry of a local congregation. This study is an analysis of social and theological aspects of the need and purpose of such a worship service as it has been carried out under the auspices of Davidson College Presbyterian Church (Davidson, North Carolina).
