- Biblical illiteracy has long been a problem for the church. It is exacerbated today because of an unbalanced reliance on the historical-critical method and on a unhealthy trend toward the privatization of faith. We can recover the story of our lives, the biblical narrative that is identity-shaping. To do so entails the use of an inclusive hermeneutic, one which draws us into an intentional dialogue with the text and with one another. A survey study of the Bible, utilizing sound hermeneutics and good group dynamics, can improve the level of biblical literacy in a congregation.
