Abstract
  • Is it possible for Montgomery Community Church (MCC) of Rockville, Maryland, in one year's time, to decide to change from an isolation model to a penetration model, as exemplified by the Willow Creek Community Church (WCCC) of South Barrington, Illinois? The multi-faceted approach included: the design and use of a semantic differential test (before and after) to determine the shifts in attitude; the cognitive goals of sermons, books, and discussions; the first-hand exposure to WCCC and a successful Maryland application; and the official vote of the congregation to shift to this model of ministry. MCC was not sufficiently dissatisfied with the status quo to motivate them to make the large-scale changes necessary to adapt this model. In this church, cognitive assent to a set of values did not necessarily mean behavioral consonance with those values.
