- The author critically examined issues in cross-racial/cross-cultural ministry such as clergy's perceptions of feelings of inadequacy, isolation, negativity, racism, and lack of support and connectedness caused by racial and cultural differences between the clergy and the congregations to which the clergy were appointed to serve. Culture can pose a stumbling block insofar as it directs how we communicate, think, behave, and perceive things. The first generation Korean pastors experience racial and cultural collisions when they serve cross-racial/cross-cultural appointments. With adequate preparation, however, cross-racially/cross-culturally appointed clergy to this service can provide the bridge between two cultures. They can mediate between the cultures. But this change is possible only when we intentionally seek to understand ourselves as racial and cultural beings and to increase cross-cultural competency through educational and training experiences.
