  • This thesis studied the process in which two successful preachers, Elam Davies and John McChormick, pastor emeritus and pastor of Chicago's Fourth Presbyterian Church, establish rapport with their congregations by preaching sermons that are relevant to the hearts and minds of their listeners. Using excerpts from their sermons and interviews with the two men the author explored the unique ways in which they use the best of current literature and theology as well as life itself to engage their listeners in an existential encounter with the message of the gospel. Buchanan's belief was that the preacher needed to be an 'exegeter' of both word and world in order to, in Davies' words, 'preach from struggle rather than solution'.
