  • This paper is a treatment of the history, scriptural and patristic foundations, and theological significance of fasting in the Orthodox church. Contemporary fasting practices in the Orthodox church are discussed in terms of the social history of Orthodox jurisdictions in the United States and the effects of a number of social factors on pastoral issues in Orthodox spirituality. The paper also reports an empirical study of the effects of fasting combined with prayer or prayer alone on subjects who were either regular fasters or who did not normally fast. Non-fasters following a regimen of fasting and prayer reported improvements in their general spiritual lives. Results were discussed in terms of the Orthodox church's teachings on the beneficial effects of fasting.
