- The study compared predominant congregational leadership patterns in the Mennonite Church: a) 'bench pattern' composed of ordained bishop, ministers, and deacons; b) 'pastor pattern' where pastors are most visible; and c) 'team pattern' where several leaders exercise respective tasks. A 1982 survey of congregations found sixty-nine percent with pastor pattern, sixteen percent bench, and eleven percent team. A 1985 sampling of members showed substantial advocacy for broad sharing of leadership, with strongest support in team churches and least in bench. Team congregations generally scored highest in relation to researcher's criteria that best leadership maximizes involvement in congregational leadership, decision making, and mission.
