  • This thesis paper concerns what comes to be called 'sacramental preaching' within a long-term care facility of the United Church of Christ. The thesis project is a personal journey of exploring the meaning of sacramental preaching in this setting from the point of view of a chaplain to a congregation whose members are not only very old, but also suffer from one or more impairments of aging that adversely effect their ability to hear a traditional sermon. I had a hunch that there was a strong link between my preaching and the pastoral work that I do daily for them. That link involved what were for me holy encounters that seemed sacramental within the pastoral relationships: praying or talking about something very sacred, or discovering unexpected love and grace. I discovered during the project what it was about sacramental preaching that seemed to reveal or announce something about those holy encounters. That 'something' was not only the relationship between chaplain and resident, but also something about chaplain and resident as embodied creatures together, with each person feeling as an active participant in something greater than themselves present and attentive in that sacred moment. this sacramental preaching project I have learned to appreciate much more deeply how word comes to sacrament and vice versa.
