  • The writings of C S Lewis continue to enjoy huge popularity because Lewis combined logic, imagination and orthodoxy. This project explores the apologetics of Lewis from a pastoral perspective. Lewis understood that Western society is profoundly secular in tone. He wrote so as to appeal to secular people. Lewis defended 'mere' Christianity, an understanding of the faith which was co-extensive with the ancient creeds; he resisted sectarianism and theological faddishness. Lewis's intellectual approach was augmented by a lifestyle which this thesis calls 'pastoral apologetics'. It combined self-awareness, active listening and a support group -- factors adaptable at the parish level.
